Highlights from the Main Stage

Sid Miller - Key Note

Accelerating Innovation in Animal Protein Production

“Today we are in a totally new revolution in agriculture – Agriculture 3.0 – it’s the age of technology. We have autonomous tractors that drive themselves, unmanned drones that spray fields for us using less chemicals. We have a good story to tell, we just need to get better at telling it.”

– Sid Miller, CommissionerTEXAS DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

Strengthening Animal Nutrition

“We often come back to technologies that may have launched in the past few years, but we continue learning and adding value to them. While they might not be brand new, we’re finding new ways to make them more impactful,” said Kyle McKinneyVP of Innovation at ALLTECHLuis TedechiProfessor, Chancellor EDGES and AgriLife Research Fellow at TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY added, “Some of the technologies we’re looking into right now involve combining different feed additives—not just using them individually as they exist today, but exploring how new additives can work together with existing ones already in the market.”

Precision Livestock Genetics Panel

Precision Livestock Genetics

“One of the things taking place is that CRISPR is a technology that continues to evolve, and it’s likely to become really integrated into the breeding process where you can use it in a very precise way to make changes and potentially do it more rapidly—especially in some livestock species.” From a regulatory standpoint, “if we share our the understanding with the consumer public of why we’re doing what we’re doing, and they perceive benefit from it, the technology becomes less of a burning issue for them.”

– Mark Walton, Senior Director, Regulatory Affairs, BIOTECHNOLOGY INNOVATION ORGANIZATION

Driving Investment into Animal Agriculture

Attendees gathered to hear industry leaders from Agritech Capital, Anterra Capital, Fall Line Capital, ADM Ventures and iSelect Fund Management share their insights on financing sustainable livestock production.

“The best way for a start-up to be attractive to a CDC is to come in through commercial, not through R&D. If you can get someone from commercial to buy into your product and see the value, that’s going to get the attention of the CDC group and the decision makers around that investment committee to move forward on investment and a partnership.”
