Leann Saunders
Leann Saunders is the Co-Founder, a Member of the Board of Directors and COO of Where Food Comes From, Inc. (WFCF), the leading on-farm third-party verification company in North America.
Where Food Comes From believes in celebrating the people and stories behind every meal by fostering trust and authenticity in food production. The company builds connections between farmers, ranchers, brands, food supply chains and consumers while supporting a sustainable food system. Through third-party verification, data analytics, traceability software, and sustainability solutions, WFCF empowers those who nurture the land and raise our food, helping them share their values and hard work with the world. The company works extensively with animal protein producers across pork, poultry, beef, bison, lamb, dairy, eggs and seafood, providing third party verification for claims such as animal welfare, environmental sustainability, natural, organic and many other raising claims. These programs help producers demonstrate responsible practices, access premium markets, and create added value throughout the supply chain. At WFCF, the mission is simple: to open doors to new opportunities through value-added programs that expand market access while ensuring transparency for a more connected food future.
Leann, alongside her husband, John Saunders, CEO, started the company out of their Platte City, Missouri apartment basement in 1995. Fortunately, in their near 30 years together, neither have attempted to harm the other and both continue to remain active in the company today at their headquarters in Castle Rock, Colorado. Their story is a testament to what can happen when passion, purpose and timing come together. Today the story of Where Food Comes From continues by being committed to a sustainable future where the efforts of farmers and ranchers are celebrated and where every meal tells a story of care, integrity and responsibility.
Leann was honored to receive the 2022 United States Meat Export Federation Distinguished Leader Award which recognizes outstanding figures in the red meat industry who exemplify the exceptional individual dedication responsible for the federation’s success. And in 2023, she went on to receive the Colorado State University Livestock Leader Award, which recognizes outstanding individuals for their contribution to the livestock industry.
